First Look: 2020 Ford Transit

As small business fleet leasing experts, Carlease works to help clients lease the best vehicles to fit their business's needs, budget, and growth. And a large part of our work is helping with the vehicle selection process. Does your business need cargo vans? Passenger vans? Luxury vehicles or ones with heavy-duty chassis? Carlease has partnerships across all makes and models so you know you're always getting an expert, unbiased opinion - and the best fleet pricing available.

In an effort to help our business clients make an informed decision, we've combed the internet to find reviews of the best fleet vehicles on the market. And today, we're taking a "First Look" at the 2020 Ford Transit Cargo/Passenger van. With an estimated base price between $34,500-$46,000, there are very few things this affordable, highly configurable vehicle can't do.

In its first refresh since the Transit debuted in 2015, we find this cargo/passenger van equipped with latest in comfort, safety and tech. Whether you're an Amazon Delivery Service Partner, a hotel shuttle service, or hauling equipment from job site to job site ...hey, even a family of 8+, this vehicle has a mode for you. Let's dive a little deeper...

Car and Driver

While tongue-in-cheek in their description of struggling San Francisco tech workers living in vans, $30,000 for a studio apartment?! You've got to be joking..., it's a testament to this vehicle's performance and spaciousness that they've highlighted the 2020 Transit's ability to accommodate. Car and Driver's Clifford Atiyeh writes, "the van's dozens of space configurations, easy up-fitting, and relatively low running costs have kept sales strong since Ford introduced the model in 2015. For 2020, Ford is refreshing the Transit cargo and passenger vans with new-to-it power-train, improved safety, and higher-end options—regardless of how customers actually use them. All engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission (goodbye six-speed) that offers a wider spread for improved fuel economy. "

Perhaps the most generous Transit comparison found in this review is to the 2020 Ford Explorer's interior. The oddly angled buttons and small displays are replaced with a sleeker, modern look and a state-of-the-art system, "most notable is the free-standing 8.0-inch touchscreen running the Sync 3 infotainment system atop a brand-new dashboard, which features an elegant (for a commercial van) array of stereo and climate controls."

And what gets THIS writer excited you might ask? As a chronically forgetful human who leaves behind their cellphone charger all the dang time, the 2020 Transit's abundance of USB outlets - in every row of the passenger van - is thrilling. Atiyeh finished, "We won't pity the [San Francisco] software engineer making $200,000 a year who buys one, but among temporary shelters with standard Wi-Fi, there aren't many this well equipped."

For Ford, innovation is the name if the game. And their executives know that, to keep up with the American market's demand for the latest in tech and safety features, they need to look forward. Frank Markus for Motortrend writes, "Ford is keeping this Transit fresh. A major mid-cycle upgrade for 2020 modifies 53 percent of the vehicle and includes two new engines, a new transmission, the option of all-wheel drive, a slew of new driver assistance and safety systems, and a freshening of the interior and exterior that includes 28 new build-able configurations (for a total of 92!)." That's 92 different ways to customize this vehicle to suite your business's needs. If you're struggling to find a vehicle with unique specifications, we can almost guarantee that you'll find a workable solution in the 2020 Ford Transit. Not to mention, it's now one of the safer models on the road.

  • Pre-Collision Assist with automatic emergency braking and Pedestrian Detection
  • Forward collision warning
  • Post-collision braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Auto high-beam headlights"

And as you upgrade, the safety features only get more inclusive, everything from blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, to front and rear split-view camera and adaptive cruise control. And you'll be able to stay connected with your drivers as every 2020 Ford Transit offers 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity for up to 10 devices. ... "VANTASTIC", exclaims Markus.

Lifting the hood, we can see where a good chunk of the updates have been made - the Ford Transit's engine. Travis Langness for Edmunds writes, "Under the hood, there are two new engines to choose from. The first is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine and the second is a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine. These engines replace the old 3.2-liter diesel and 3.7-liter V6, respectively. Both of the new engines are paired with Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission, a system we're fond of in other Ford products including the F-150. Combined with the 10-speed automatic, we also expect gains in fuel economy."

Outside of the new engine configurations, Christopher Smith for Motor1 writes, "Perhaps the most notable option upgrade is the [newly available] Ford intelligent all-wheel-drive system. [It] has the capability to send all power to the front wheels in normal mode to prevent slipping or skidding, or drivers can select various modes that better manage power for a range of conditions." While all-wheel-drive was available on European models since introduction, this is the first time the American market is getting a Transit that provides this option, opening up a lot of additional capabilities for America's favorite Transit van!

Heavy loads and inclement weather will no longer be an issue when you put the 2020 Ford Transit to work for you. Powerful and yet fuel efficient, the all-wheel-drive model is set to take the American market by storm when it launches this summer.

While the 2020 Ford Transit offers you close to 100 configurations to meet your business's needs, if you're in the market for a luxury vehicle for a C-Suite executive or a fleet of heavy-duty pickup trucks, you may want to consider looking elsewhere. If you're in the market for versatility, power and fuel efficiency - the 2020 Ford Transit fits the bill.
